Hard references

A recommendation and remarks

My first recommendation of a critic-translator is Artur David Waley (1889-1966), and the second—Stephen Owen (who, by the way, had written the foreword to Waley's "The Book of Songs", see below). I higly recommand all the remaining references too (with the single exception of the odd, N.Y.'s silly 4-line translations of Japanese haiku; his monography is still of interest and makes a worthwhile reading).

Needless to say, my collection is narrow. There are many times more poetry collections and critical monographies—all of them wonderful, than I am able to cite (never mind read ☺).
